Planet IX Integrates Chainlink VRF To Support Tamper-Proof, Randomized Distribution of In-Game Resources and Items

We’re excited to announce that Planet IX — a blockchain-based strategy and trading game — has integrated Chainlink Verifiable Random Function (VRF) on the Polygon mainnet.

By integrating the industry-leading decentralized oracle network, we now have access to a tamper-proof and auditable source of randomness that will be used to help randomize player rewards when prospecting Waste in EternaLabs, tiers during facility construction in NewLands LLC, and the contents of Gravity Grade crates. Ultimately this creates a more exciting and transparent user experience, as players can be confident that the odds of certain outcomes are in fact accurate, and know for a fact what chance they have of obtaining certain high-value resources or items.

Planet IX had previously integrated Chainlink VRF to help randomly select IXT CAT RAFF winners, and Chainlink Automation to help automate weekly draws. Now, we’re expanding the VRF integration so that players can verify the integrity of our random in-game mechanics for themselves.

Planet IX is an NFT-based strategy game that gives players a unique gaming experience via true digital ownership through NFTs. Boasting over 190,000 connected wallets, Planet IX has an immense and dedicated community that puts it at the forefront of NFT gaming.

In order to help ensure a fair distribution of certain in-game resources and items, we need access to a secure random number generator (RNG) that any user could independently audit. However, RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. For instance, RNG solutions derived from blockchain data like block hashes can be exploited by miners/validators, while off-chain RNG solutions derived from off-chain APIs are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.

After reviewing various solutions, we selected Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by a time-tested oracle network, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.

Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Planet IX smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that Waste prospecting rewards, Facility tiers during construction, and Gravity Grade crates are provably fair and were not tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the Planet IX team.

“Randomness is an essential element of multiplayer games, and Chainlink VRF has established itself as the industry-standard RNG for Web3 gaming. We’re excited to expand our use cases for the service to help ensure a fair distribution of certain in-game resources and items.” — Karl Blomsterwall, CEO of Planet IX.

About Chainlink

Chainlink is the industry-standard Web3 services platform that has enabled trillions of dollars in transaction volume across DeFi, insurance, gaming, NFTs, and other major industries. As the leading decentralized oracle network, Chainlink enables developers to build feature-rich Web3 applications with seamless access to real-world data and off-chain computation across any blockchain and provides global enterprises with a universal gateway to all blockchains.

About Planet IX

Planet IX is an online game based on Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) built on the Polygon network. The multiplayer strategy game takes place on the titular planet. Planet IX is a metaverse; by connecting real-world geolocations to user generated virtual environments, Planet IX works as a bridge between the digital and the physical world. These environments can be claimed, bought, sold, and will eventually be customizable. Players trade their Planet IX land (PIX) to create Territory NFTs in an effort to rejuvenate the land, and restore life on the planet.
