Data Lake is an EU-funded startup that is working on solving some of the biggest issues in healthcare and medical research. Progress in modern medicine is based on access to good data, but until now researchers’ access to data has been frustrated due to fragmentation and a lack of representation in data sets, as well as existing systems not respecting data donor privacy or asking for their consent. With the help of the Polygon blockchain, Data Lake is aiming to solve all of these problems by putting patient consent to the use of their data on the blockchain.
Due to the immutability of the blockchain and legislation in Europe regarding Personal Identifiable Data (PID), blockchain is not a suitable technology for transmitting medical data records (even when anonymized). What it is perfect for, however, is building a database of record for whether someone has consented to the use of their data or not. This is where Polygon comes into play, as it is a public blockchain that provides absolute transparency and removes the need for trust entirely when it comes to someone’s consent status. Additionally it’s verifiable by anyone at any time, which allows all stakeholders involved in the transfer of medical data to know with absolute certainty whether data has been transferred with express consent or not. This not only protects people who may or may not have consented to the use of their data, but it also helps researchers fulfill regulatory obligations by only using data for which they have the permission to include in their studies.
The Data Donor consent application that Data Lake has created is built on Web3 technology and is powered by the Polygon blockchain. Donor consent operations – whether giving or revoking consent – as well as each data processing operation, appear as immutable transactions on Polygon. This means that Data Donors can view their consent and other data operations, and get a truthful and up-to-date record at any time, without needing to trust a privately-held database.
In our modern age, data operations happen almost instantaneously. As Data Lake’s global donation program scales up, it becomes increasingly important to ensure there is no ambiguity as to whether someone has given consent for their data to be used, and their consent status must be updated almost in real-time. The speed and scalability of the Polygon makes it the perfect choice to power donor consents and data operations. With the aim of creating a global data donation system, Data Lake required a chain that would quickly process data transactions regardless of the size of their donor database, and Polygon was one of the few networks that fulfilled this requirement. This agility will allow data donors, data providers, and data receivers to have an always-accurate and up-to-date record of whether someone has given their consent for their medical data to be used for medical research.
Another key feature of Polygon that made it the logical choice for the project is that it is a carbon-neutral blockchain, with the aim of becoming carbon negative in the future. The Data Lake team is absolutely focused on scientific progress and revolutionizing medical research, but they also recognize that you cannot extricate any project from its environmental impact when the project requires computational power to function. Besides being public, agile and scalable, the carbon-neutrality of Polygon plays a quiet but vital part in the scientific data ecosystem that Data Lake is building.
The Data Lake data donation system is currently on Polygon’s testnet, and is undergoing robust testing and auditing to ensure the system is completely secure. Test consents have already been successfully written to testnet via their Web3-based consent application, after which the entire system will go live and be moved over to Polygon mainnet in the coming weeks. But the team isn’t stopping there! They believe that their project is an incredible opportunity to democratize data, including building a new data economy that includes rewards for all stakeholders, not just large data companies. That’s why they have tokenized their project and will be launching the $LAKE token later this year.
In the coming months and years, the Data Lake team is laser-focused on building a vibrant ecosystem with thousands – if not millions – of participants. They aim to make the Data Lake system the de facto standard for legal and ethical access to medical data, with a consent-based approach that is built on blockchain technology and powered by the Polygon network. They fully outline their vision for the future of their data donation system and the utility of their token in their Whitepaper.
About Polygon:
Polygon is the leading blockchain development platform, offering scalable, affordable, secure and sustainable blockchains for Web3. Its growing suite of products offers developers easy access to major scaling solutions including L2 (ZK Rollups and Optimistic Rollups), sidechains, hybrid, stand-alone and enterprise chains, and data availability. Polygon’s scaling solutions have seen widespread adoption with 19,000+ decentralized applications hosted, 1.6B+ total transactions processed, 142M+ unique user addresses, and $5B+ in assets secured. Polygon is carbon neutral with the goal of leading the Web3 ecosystem in becoming carbon negative.
